Dragon was the dictation product for two decades, and most of it no longer exists. Dragon for Mac was discontinued in 2018. Dragon Home followed in 2023. Dragon Anywhere, the mobile app, shut down in July 2026.

What's left is Dragon Professional v16 for Windows at about $699.99, Dragon Professional Anywhere, Dragon Legal, and Dragon Medical One - where Nuance's attention has clearly gone since Microsoft acquired it.

If you're looking for a replacement, the right one depends entirely on which of Dragon's capabilities you actually relied on. They're now split across different products.

What replaces what

First: are you sure you need to replace it?

Dragon still does two things better than anything on this list.

Trainable vocabulary that persists. You correct a term once and it's right forever, across everything you dictate. Modern tools have custom dictionaries, but they're shallower - you're adding entries to a list, not adapting an acoustic model to your voice and your domain.

Full desktop voice control. Not just typing, but navigating, correcting, and commanding by voice. Newer dictation apps are text-entry tools. If you drive a Windows machine hands-free with Dragon, replacing it with Wispr Flow will be a serious downgrade.

If either applies, Dragon Professional v16 is still sold and still works. You're buying into a product line being wound down, which is a real risk over five years - but so is switching to something that doesn't do the job.

Best general replacement on Windows

superwhisper is the closest philosophical match: local processing, no subscription required if you buy the $249.99 lifetime licence, and models you control. Free covers unlimited dictation on the small models; Pro is $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year. On Windows without a decent GPU, expect it to be slower than Dragon was.

Wispr Flow is the better-finished product at $12 a user per month billed annually - filler-word removal, tone matching, learned vocabulary - but it's cloud only, which is a hard stop if you chose Dragon specifically because it ran locally.

There is no Dragon for Mac, and there won't be

Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in 2018 and has never replaced it. Anyone selling you a "Dragon for Mac" in 2026 is selling something else.

The Mac replacements are genuinely good, largely because Apple Silicon made local speech models fast. VoiceInk is $29 one-time, GPL v3, Apple Silicon only, with per-app mode switching. superwhisper is the most capable and supports Intel Macs. Parrot is free forever with no account. And Apple Dictation is already installed, free, and on-device - try it before buying anything.

For voice control of a Mac rather than dictation, Apple Voice Control is free, on-device, and covers the whole system, with natural language input arriving via Apple Intelligence in 2026.

Dragon Anywhere shut down - what now

Dragon's mobile app closed in July 2026. Replacements:

Wispr Flow covers iOS and Android with the same dictionary as its desktop apps, at $12 a user per month annually. Voicy spans Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Chrome on one $8.49-a-month subscription with unlimited personal devices, and offers 20% off for students and for users with a disability. Full voice control, not just dictation

If you used Dragon to drive the computer hands-free - because of RSI, a mobility impairment, or preference - dictation apps aren't a replacement.

Talon Voice is the strongest answer: free, local, macOS, Windows, and Linux (X11), scriptable in Python, with voice commands, noise recognition, and eye tracking. It has a weeks-long learning curve and a large, helpful community. Numen does the same job on Linux.

Built-in options: Apple Voice Control on macOS and iOS, and Voice Access on Windows 11 22H2+ and on Android. All free, all on-device. Note that Windows Speech Recognition - the old Windows equivalent - was deprecated in December 2023 and removed from current Windows 11 builds; Voice Access replaced it.

Medical and legal

These aren't general dictation problems and general dictation tools aren't the answer.

Medical. Dragon Medical One is still active and still the incumbent, at roughly $99 per user per month on a one-year term ($89 on two years, $79 on three) plus about $525 one-time implementation. The ambient scribing alternatives are cheaper and easier to buy: Freed at $39–119 a month with a seven-day trial and no card, or Heidi Health's free tier. See the best AI medical scribes.

Legal. Dragon Legal remains part of the active line. BigHand treats legal dictation as workflow software at a reported $3,000–4,000 per attorney per year, with a per-user Professional subscription for smaller firms. Philips SpeechLive starts at $12.90 per user per month, though speech recognition is a $25.90 add-on on top.

What you'll miss

Be realistic about the gap.

• Vocabulary depth. Nothing matches a trained Dragon profile on domain-specific terms.
• Voice correction. "Correct that," "select the last sentence," and the rest are largely absent from modern dictation apps.
• Consistency. Dragon's output was predictable. AI cleanup is better on average and occasionally invents something you didn't say.
• Formatting commands. Dictating structured documents by voice is worse now than it was in 2015.

What you gain: offline models that run on a laptop, one-time prices under $60, cross-platform support, and cleanup that turns rambling speech into readable prose.
