Where it falls short

• The good features are hardware-gated. Assistant voice typing needs a Pixel 6 or newer; Rambler needs a 2026 flagship. On a mid-range Android from two years ago you get the basic version and nothing else.
• Rambler isn't shipped. Previewed in May 2026 and not generally available. Don't buy a phone for it yet.
• The Assistant toggle silently hides itself. If Gboard's primary language doesn't match the device language, the option simply doesn't appear — with no explanation. A common and baffling support issue.
• Rambler is hybrid, not local. Simple requests run on Gemini Nano on-device; heavier cleanup goes to the cloud. The privacy story gets murkier as the features get better.
• No custom vocabulary worth the name. Same weakness as every OS built-in.

Who it's for

Every Android user, as the default starting point. Download the offline pack — it's a strict improvement, faster and more private than the cloud path. If you're on a Pixel 6 or later, turn on Assistant voice typing. Consider a paid app like Willow Voice or LumeVoice only if you need custom vocabulary or cross-device sync with a desktop, and keep an eye on Rambler, which may make that unnecessary.
